“As a trumpet performer, composer, arranger, bandleader, educator, and intellectual, Taylor’s achievements are nothing less than extraordinary. I have commissioned two large-scale big band arrangements of him, which I have had the privilege of performing around the country and overseas.”

Rex Richardson, DMA – Associate Professor of Trumpet at Virginia Commonwealth University and world-renowned classical and jazz trumpet soloist and composer

“Ghosts” by Old New Things

The brainchild of Trey Pollard and Taylor Barnett, Old New Things draws inspiration from American folk music and European chamber-jazz, creating a hybrid music that is honest, direct and expansive. The unique instrumentation of brass, reeds, banjo, pedal steel, acoustic guitar, bass, and drums offers a varied and colorful sonic palate not heard anywhere else. Their debut album “Ghosts” features original compositions as well as creative interpretations of music by Albert Ayler and J. S. Bach. “Ghosts” is available for purchase here.

Old New Things is Trey Pollard (acoustic guitar, pedal steel), Taylor Barnett (flugelhorn, muted trumpet), Adam Larrabee (banjo), JC Kuhl (tenor saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet), Cameron Ralston (bass), and Emre Kartari (drums).

Liner Notes

I believe that above all else, a piece of music should have a definitive character and display a clear concept both within and beyond the idiomatic musical language; these are the attributes that I desire most in my playing and writing. I received, fully formed, the character and concept for each piece on this album before I put pencil to staff paper. With these characters and concepts in the fore of my mind, I used the musical techniques at my disposal to try to craft each piece to be true to itself.

I write this not to boast in the quality of my music or to say that this album is somehow objectively better than music that is commercially motivated; but rather to say that this music is my most sincere effort at expressing something meaningful and concrete. That you would hear and appreciate this sincerity is my wish.

Thanks for listening
