For Someone

“As a trumpet performer, composer, arranger, bandleader, educator, and intellectual, Taylor’s achievements are nothing less than extraordinary. I have commissioned two large-scale big band arrangements of him, which I have had the privilege of performing around the country and overseas.”

Rex Richardson, DMA – Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Virginia Commonwealth University and world-renowned classical and jazz trumpet soloist and composer

Liner Notes

I believe that above all else, a piece of music should have a definitive character and display a clear concept both within and beyond the idiomatic musical language; these are the attributes that I desire most in my playing and writing. I received, fully formed, the character and concept for each piece on this album before I put pencil to staff paper. With these characters and concepts in the fore of my mind, I used the musical techniques at my disposal to try to craft each piece to be true to itself.

I write this not to boast in the quality of my music or to say that this album is somehow objectively better than music that is commercially motivated; but rather to say that this music is my most sincere effort at expressing something meaningful and concrete. That you would hear and appreciate this sincerity is my wish.
